B.Tech in Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with design, construction and maintenance of physical infrastructures like roads, buildings, bridges, canals, dams, railways etc. With an increasing need to develop and maintain India’s infrastructure, which is lagging in all aspects, this field is gaining significant prominence in the industry.

Course Duration:

Generally institutes/universities offer the B.Tech Civil engineering programme for a duration of 4 years.

Admission Criteria:

For admissions in B.Tech Civil Engineering, following are the criteria for eligibility:

I. The candidate has passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with at least 50% marks in aggregate of three subjects, namely, Physics, Mathematics and any one subject out of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and Technical Vocational subject.

OR

II. The candidate has secured a minimum of 50% marks in a Diploma recognized by AICTE or a state board of technical education, which has a minimum duration of 3 years.

The admission criteria can differ according to the institution you are applying for.

Admission Process:

The admission process for B.Tech in Civil also differs based on the institution. Following are the most commonly practiced admission processes followed by the universities:

I. Admissions are also conducted on the basis of JEE (Main) scores by institutes/universities like IIT, Thapar University etc.

II. Few of the Institutes/Universities conduct their own entrance exams like SRM University, BITS Pilani, VIT University etc.

III. There is a Counselling round conducted by few universities for candidates who successfully clear the entrance examination.

IV. There is an additional round, which consists of a Personal Interview in the selection process of selected universities/institutes.

Course Design:

The B.Tech in Civil Engineering course structure is designed in such a way, which helps students to learn the theoretical and practical knowledge of different fields that are covered in the study of civil engineering.

The curriculum includes classroom lectures, practicals, industry visits and summer internships, which helps the students to not only gain theoretical knowledge but also get practical exposure.

The first year of B.Tech in most of the engineering institutes includes common subjects. Specialisations are offered in the second year of B.Tech programme. Following is the general syllabus for civil engineering; these subjects are prescribed by most of the engineering colleges in India-

Subjects & Topics:

  1. Fluid Mechanics- Fluid and continuum, Types of fluid flows, Equation of motion along a streamline, laminar flow through pipes
