Education has been used as a tool for social change since decades. Today, owing to growing environmental problems, there’s a dire need to change ideas and attitudes towards planet earth which can be brought only through education. As we know, it develops the knowledge and skills which are necessary for people to act in ways that contribute to more sustainable patterns of living.

Over the past few years, we have faced rapid deterioration in the quality of environment which includes pollution of air, water and land, loss of ecosystems and species etc. Climate change has now become one of today’s most serious global challenges and it requires immediate and urgent action to address its adverse impacts. Although, there have been various efforts globally in this direction, still educators as well as policy makers have not yet fully utilised potential of education to address these challenges.

International conference on sustainable education on “Sustainable education” is planned to bring together experts and practitioners on one platform to discuss innovative ideas, practices and policies and come forward with action agenda for sustainability education with focus on school education. Through ICSE, Mobius Foundation and Climate Reality Project India are providing a global platform for national and international dignitaries to discuss the need and ways of incorporation and active integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Climate Change Education (CCE) and Environmental Education (EE) in current course curriculums.

Some of the key objectives of this conference are as follows:

  • To share experiences and good practices in sustainability education in schools across the globe.
  • To formulate recommendations for integration of CCE, EE and ESD in Indian education for curriculum designers, teachers and policy makers.
  • To identify partnership opportunities for schools, NGOs, UN agencies, and global, regional and national networks to enhance formal and non-formal education programs on ESD, CCE and EE.
  • To define goals for the development of a complete EE, ESD and CCE program in south Asia.

Through this conference, Pradip Burman wishes to strengthen the existing programmes with national, regional and international professionals and development of future programmes and activities in the area of sustainability education. Also, to bring in more policies and to fully utilize the potential of education to address the challenges related to sustainability.
