The Burmans — A Story of Perseverance

Dabur is an iconic company in India which is more than 133 years old. In the mid-1880s, an ayurvedic practitioner Dr. S.K. Burman concocted medicines for diseases like cholera and malaria. He went on to set up Dabur India Ltd in 1884 to mass produce his ayurvedic formulations. Due to his hard work, Dabur is one of India’s leading FMCG companies with sales of more than $1 billion and a market cap of more than $9.5 billion. Building on a legacy of quality and experience of over 133 years, Dabur is the world’s largest ayurvedic and natural health care company.

The Burmans were among the first business families in India to segregate family and business when they handed over the management of the company to professionals in 1998. Gearing towards a new system where the direct involvement of the family is limited, the Burmans have formulated a family council that acts as an interface between the family and the Dabur management.

The family members’ involvement has come in for a qualitative shift with fresh members being encouraged to develop their own ventures. These proposed ventures are then presented to the family council for approval and funding a professional management team that would be able to launch Dabur onto a higher path. The Burman family has therefore downscaled its direct involvement in day-to-day operations. Allowing a team of able managers to run the company and steer its fortune. The satisfaction that people have received from Dabur’s products is what motivates the Burman family to keep going. Following are the key people behind their success:

Dr. Anand Burman- An alumnus of St. Paul, Darjeeling, India, apart from his studies he was always interested in areas related to Research and Development of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Professionally, he has held many assignments with the Dabur Group over the years. Anand Burman is the fifth generation scion of the famed Burman clan.He is also the Managing Director of Dabur Oncology PLC UK, a subsidiary of Dabur Pharma Ltd.

Mr. Amit Burman- Mr. Amit Burman is responsible for Dabur India’s foray into processed foods business with the setting up of Dabur Foods Ltd. It is to Amit’s credit that Dabur Real and Homemade recipes are household names today.

Amit took on the responsibilities as the CEO of Dabur Foods in 1999 and forayed into the processed foods business with a range of ethnic cooking pastes, chutneys and packaged fruit juices. Amit stepped down as the CEO of Dabur Foods when the company was merged into Dabur India Ltd in July 2007. He has since been appointed as the Vice Chairman of Dabur India Ltd.

Mr. Mohit Burman, son of Mr. Vivek and Mrs. Monica Burman, is the driving force behind the Burman family’s entry into several high-growth and sunrise sectors of financial services like Life Insurance, Pensions, Annuities and Asset Management besides Agriculture and Retailing.

Pradip Burman, born in a family of innovators and philanthropists, is the grate grandson of Dabur founder Dr S K Burman, embodying the same ideals. He is passionately interested in social causes.

To pursue his dream of leading the world towards a more sustainable future, Mr. Burman founded Mobius Foundation with the sole objective of environment conservation. He currently serves as the Chairman of Ayurvet Ltd. and Sanat Products Ltd.
