The discipline of paediatrics is both science and art as a paediatrician needs to stay in contact with the family members of children at psychological, physical as well as socio-economic levels. A paediatrician looks after the health of infants, children and adolescents since they are in their foetal stage. He or she is generally held responsible for their physical, emotional and mental progress till they reach maturity.

What holds best for a paediatrician is to have an MBBS degree with further specialization of MD in Paediatrics. It gets better if he or she possesses a unique aptitude and special love for children. In between, a student is required to pursue a one year long internship post MBBS. Paediatricians can find opportunities in various sub-specialties like neonatology, paediatric intensive care with gastroenterology, neurology and cardiology.

Job prospects are ripe for such aspirants who display features like emotional and behaviour stability, motivation and initiative, honesty and integrity, leadership qualities and interpersonal skills. While carrying out clinical work, a student needs to have diligence, punctuality and focus upon clinical performance and academic ability. A competent paediatrician should be attuned to advancements and developments that are taking place in the field of medical science relevant to child health. Also, he or she must be research-oriented and have teaching skills to train manpower in the medical and paramedical profession. After finishing with MD in Paediatrics course, a candidate must be able to take down a detailed history while performing the whole physical examination of a child to carry out a clinical diagnosis.

Additionally, he or she should be capable of performing therapeutic and investigative procedures for a child and be able to interpret laboratory and imaging results. Also, he or she must plan treatment for illnesses through rational drug therapy and stay equipped to manage childhood emergencies while planning to rehabilitate those going through chronic problems. Paediatricians are needed to stay empathetic towards their young patients and be ready to offer counselling to them and their families at once.

The Comprehensive Syllabus

They are self-directed learners who analyse the relevant literature critically for practicing evidence-based paediatrics. Apart from these, it takes a lot to become a paediatrician. You may have to go through a rigorous coursework that includes a vast syllabus. You get to learn about critical clinical issues like neonatology, puberty, nutrition, developmental delay, cardiovascular health and infections. Then comes disorders and their prevention to help children stay in better respiratory, gastrointestinal, nephrology, neurology, haematology, endocrinology, immunology, rheumatology and orthopaedic health. Therefore, study hard and your future is bright if you want to cure people and work for their welfare.
