Institutions That Offer Rehabilitation for Disabled

Children who suffer from disabilities face a lot of challenges and the risks are higher in developing countries. The diverse topography and economic barriers make it difficult for the differently-abled kids to experience the rehabilitation services which are more institution based and are lesser affordable for many people.

Various Stakeholders

Some non-profit organisations offer community based services by sending trained rehabilitation workers into the communities to offer rehabilitation to the special children. While some of them are institution based to have school teachers, caregivers and counsellors who act as therapists and educationists to empower and aware the children with special abilities.

They carry on teaching exercises to help a child in growth and development as well as provide rehabilitation for disabled. Their grassroots approach is to create awareness amongst families so that the results are more inclusive in mapping the progress.

Community Based Rehabilitation

The non-governmental organisations offer community based rehabilitation for disabled children through their home visiting programme. This method helps the community workers to associate with families in designing an appropriate development programme for every individual child.

Assessment and Intervention

The community interventionists are trained to meet the needs of parents of each special child and assess the conditions that these kids suffer from. They also demonstrate exercises suitable for each child of the community they work into and keep a close watch on the parents who practice them.

Individual Approach

They further create individual files and note down the progress made by a special child. After that, they lay down an activity card to be followed by every parent to know what to do and what not to practice with their child in the week ahead before paying the next visit. The community workers also form local partnerships for a better approach towards the problem at the decentralised level.

Concept of Child Care Workers

The child care workers for differently-abled kids form alliances with various governmental and non-profit agencies to render quality services to the vulnerably disabled. One such initiative is An Association of Mothers of Disabled Children (known as MANIDI) as well as another example can be given of a Cooperative of Family and Friends of Disabled Children (COFANIDI) in Dominican Republic.

Such initiatives also look for forging partnerships with medical specialists who tend to such wards at a lower cost and refer them to local, private schools if they are mentally challenged or are hearing impaired.

Activities at Grassroots level

Out of the several activities carried out for the physically and mentally challenged people, the prominent ones include early intervention, special education, human resource development, employment, social security schemes and rehabilitation homes. They are also given aids like tricycles, artificial limbs, crutches, callipers, folding wheelchairs and retrofitted scooters to enhance their capabilities.
