“We don’t inherit the planet from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children” — Native American Verb.

The existing generation of this planet is suffering from extreme conditions of water, air & land pollution. This overuse of resources is led by apathy and increased stress on natural resources led by the ever-increasing population. We need to consider overpopulation as an alarming issue as it affects the distribution of natural resources; resources that are already polluted and diminishing due to dense population.

To have a glance at the status of India’s population — It is one of the most densely populated countries of the world. It has to support about 18% of the world population. However, it’s the land area that is merely 2.4% of the land area of the world. This excess population is itself a huge problem which leads to a lack of consumable resources for each & every citizen of this planet! This problem is becoming more and more acute day by day due to the rapid increase in population — by about 22 million people a year! And India’s population has been growing at a rate of 2.2% per annum. It’s high time we do something about it!

Mr. Pradip Burman, Chairman Mobius Foundation and a pioneer in the area of sustainability in India, has been actively working in line with the Government of India’s commitment to promoting population stabilization. On June 26, 2019, the Mobius Foundation launched Phase 2 of the project ‘AAKAR’ after the successful completion of Phase 1 in December 2018. The project’s phase 1 covered 200 villages of two highly populated districts of Uttar Pradesh; Baharaich and Barabanki. The focus was on building awareness of Family Planning and various contraceptive measures. With Phase-I, the Mobius Foundation intended to support the efforts of the Government of India towards FP2020 goals, population stabilization, and to extend its support towards the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” campaign.

Taking a closer glance at the current status of planet earth; it becomes a must to have such initiatives that educate the people & make them holistically aware of the issues caused by overpopulation. Looking at the population numbers, it seems a huge uphill task and even impossible to control or lessen the population, but organizations like Mobius Foundation are making it possible and are truly inspiring each one of us. Controlling the population and stabilizing it, surely looks like a task initially but in the long run, it is a great benefit for our one and only one planet earth.
