Special School for Autism in Delhi Gaining Prominence

People have recognised autism as a form of disability different from others. Keeping to this, many non-governmental organisations started coming up with programmes for the rehabilitation of autistic children. They offer holistic services all under one roof to treat autistic disorders. They do not just look forward to rehabilitate these children but also carry out research for their inclusion in the society. An ideal place for the differently-abled includes facilities of a special school, early intervention centre, sensory integration clinic, research cell, diagnostic centre as well as an outreach cell.

An institution to provide such facilities was established for the first time in the capital. Full-fledged complexes came up that had a favourable atmosphere to groom a special child. The example was followed by every special school for autism in Delhi which replicated the same set-up. These schools took up the responsibility of providing education to each child with special abilities who has attained 3 years of age.

Target Group

They specially focused upon such children who belonged to a group of autistic spectrum disorders and which also suffered from multiple disabilities. Their effort offers therapy and productive education to a large number of the mentally-impaired individuals who are looking for a cure after not being able to fit into the conventional special education programmes running since ages.

Approaches and Strategies

The highlights of these special programmes for the mentally-challenged include an approach centred on life that covered planning of the curriculum to fulfil the needs of a child and his or her family. They also try a mixture of different approaches that incorporate drama, dance, music, yoga and horse riding as a therapy. Behaviour management strategies are also designed to meet the individual needs. One of the commonly used techniques for teaching comprises positive reinforcement.

Therapies for Treatment and Relaxation

A significant part of the intervention programme is the Sensory Integration therapy. As academics are vital for a target group which is high functioning integrated, the Montessori Method is used in all classrooms following adaptations suited for every child. Information and communication technology also has a large role to play in educating these special children. Yoga, sports, music and dance are also provided, not only treat them but also to offer rejuvenation for a healthy body and mind.

They are also taught to manage their immediate environment and perform daily life activities in real situations. At these schools, students learn very basic things like arranging their clothes and keeping them properly, make beds, cook, wash and groom themselves. Apart from these, vocational training is also given to youngsters who have reached at least 16 years. They are trained in skills like greeting card making, jewellery design and gardening for better livelihood prospects.
