What is Sustainability: According to the United Nations, sustainability is defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

How to be Sustainable: Sustainability is all about adapting to less disturbing and environmentally contributing lifestyle habits. To have more clean, renewable sources of energy — sources that renew themselves, rather than sources that get depleted. Becoming more sustainable doesn’t take a lot of work. Simple things, like recycling, conserving water and using LED light bulbs, can make a significant impact on your energy efficiency. Energy conservation — or simply, using less energy — is a much needed practice to be more sustainable.

In addition to the most commonly considered sources: wind, solar, and water — there’s also bioenergy and geothermal energy. Bioenergy is the process of creating energy from biological masses such as straw, manure and other agricultural byproducts. Geothermal energy is energy from Earth’s internal energy sources, like geysers.

Difference: Sustainability sees the Earth as a limited resource. It’s a mindset that believes in operating in this world with greater efficiency so those operations can be sustained indefinitely. Renewable Energy, meanwhile, is a method of energy production that does not exhaust resources for its energy generation because it uses resources that can be renewed continually.

Sustainability

  • Thinking that guides the conscientious use of our natural resources
  • Can be applied to everything we do in business as well as at home
  • Includes using renewable energy sources

Renewable Energy

  • Processes or products to create energy with renewable resources
  • Only applies to specific methods of generating energy
  • Can be sustainable when executed correctly

While sustainability is a mindset and renewable energy is a method, both are environmentally-focused.

While there are numerous organizations in India which is trying multiple sustainability initiatives, very few have been able to achieve some degree of success. One such successful initiative is led by Pradip Burman’s Mobius Foundation. Mobius foundation is the first NGO in India to install Hydro panel technology in rural areas. These panels would provide potable water using air and sun, renewable sources of energy. It generates drinking water from the atmosphere using solar technology. It is an off-grid, innovative and sustainable water solution. Life span of one panel is 15 years, and a single panel is sufficient for generating 2–5 litres of water every day.

Mobius foundation has also established atmospheric water generators to mitigate the problem of erratic water supply in rural areas. They have adopted SkyWater’s patented technology to make the most out of atmospheric water generators. Typical working conditions include a temperature range of 20–45 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity range of 30% or higher. The water produced by these generators is safe and clean. When tested for quality by government-recognized labs, the water showed absence of organic and other dissolved impurities. It is an environment-friendly technology that does not waste large quantities of water, unlike reverse osmosis and desalination systems.

The Mobius foundation believes in building a green and sustainable space for future generations. It is continuously doing efforts to keep up with the basic responsibilities of preserving the environment and society we live within.
